Naltrexone blocks the effects of opioid medication, including pain relief or feelings of well-being that can lead to opioid abuse. It can help keep you from feeling a “need” to use the opioid.
It also manages alcohol or opioid use disorder by reducing cravings and feelings of euphoria associated with substance use disorder.
Naltrexone has also been found to be effective in the treatment of other addictions and may be used for them off-label. Effects begin within 30 minutes. A decreased desire for opioids, though, may take a few weeks.
